Shimazu Yasujiro: Fanfare for the Common Man

Though not as well known, the film director Shimazu Yasujiro is finally getting recognition as a master stylist in Japanese cinema history. Born in the late Meiji period, Shimazu found his passion for film in the silent era. After the great 1923 Kanto earthquake, Shimazu became a star director of Shochiku’s Kamata studio, and pioneered a style of petit bourgeois dramas that closely examined modern life for the first time. From brash early talkies (First Steps Ashore) to literary adaptations (Okoto and Sasuke), Shimazu continued to tell the stories of ordinary Japanese in a rapidly changing society, and to innovate modern story-telling in the process. A mentor to Kinoshita Keisuke and others, Shimazu is an often-overlooked architect of Japanese film, and his films still resonate with the warmth and simplicity of this golden age.
